Peggy's Cove Blueberry Grunt - #SundaySupper

Blueberry Grunt Recipe

Last September my husband and I (along with my sister and her husband) took a cruise to Canada and New England. It was a fabulous trip and one I'll always look back on with fond memories.

One of my fondest memories of that vacation was our excursion to Peggy's Cove in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in particular our tour bus guide named Ellen. She was a complete hoot, being so fun and friendly and sharing her stories that make you want to move right to Nova Scotia and never look back.

At the end of our tour, Ellen handed us each a recipe card for her world famous blueberry grunt. I stuck it in my purse and promised myself that one day I'd make her grunt (that sounds weird), and post it to my blog. With this week's #SundaySupper being all about summertime berries, today is that day :)

This post is not only a recipe but a little look back at our trip to Peggy's Cove and meeting Ellen. I'm sure Ellen would not remember me, but I'll always remember her and her beautiful home of Halifax, Nova Scotia! We're not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy!

Here is a picture of my sister Lynn and I, and below it is a picture of my brother-in-law Jim and my husband Mark going for a little walk on the rocks. Better watch your back, Mark! I find their picture extremely funny. Let me assure you that no harm was done to the unsuspecting Mark. LOL

And now let me introduce you to Ellen. As you can tell, she is just the character I, charming and extremely welcoming. I'm so glad we had the pleasure of meeting her and of course in her sharing her delicious recipe for blueberry grunt. Thanks Ellen, please forgive me for tweaking it ever so slightly :)

PEGGY'S COVE BLUEBERRY GRUNT - (aka Ellen's Favorite Blueberry Grunt)

4 cups fresh blueberries
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/2 cup water

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons shortening
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream (you may need a little more or less depending on the humidity in the air).

-In a wide bottom skillet over medium high heat, boil the first 5 filling ingredients until the berries pop and the filling is nice and juicy.
-Reduce the heat to low.
-In a small bowl or cup, mix together the corn starch and water.
-Add the starch mixture to the blueberries and stir over low heat until the mixture thickens slightly. Turn off the heat.
-Meanwhile, in a medium bowl using your hands or a pastry blender, mix together all of the dumpling ingredients, adding by cream by tablespoons until you reach the consistency of a soft, not crumbly dough.
-Drop the dough by spoon fulls on top of the hot blueberries.
-Cover tightly (do not peek) and cook over medium heat for approximately 15-20 minutes until the dumplings have cooked through and browned ever so slightly.
-Allow to cool a slightly.
-Serve warm with ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
-Enjoy :)
